Thanks for looking and commenting, Jan. Yes the reality is that progress too often comes with a price - anywhere in the world.

Shouchen, this photo is actually taken at Xingang in the relatively early morning. We had just arrived and docked but not gotten off the ship. What we see here is a combination of morning mist and atmospheric pollution. When we left the port area a couple of hours later the morning mist was gone but it was still very hazy due to the pollution. Beijing proper was quite smoggy at times and quite clear at other times - just like any large city (and this is one LARGE city). My overall read is that there is a bit more pollution than you'd expect. I'm told there are areas that are really bad but we did not see them and certainly didn't need a face mask or other such nonsense. Many of my other picutures show quite clear skies.

Great to know. I think you picked a good time to visit. April-June is the worst time due to the infamous dust-storm...

We were uninformed "babes" relative to what the conditions would be. Our main concern was that it wouldn't be too hot. All 3 days were delightful - warm sun but cool breezes, and lots of friendly people!
