Hey guys!

I haven't been around for quite a while, partly because I've had problems, well one actually, with my Canon 30D. Last summer (yeah, in 2008, I know, it's been a long time ;-) ) I was taking pictures of a few Brazilians dancing and playing music in Toulouse, France (that's where I live now) and once back home I transfered the pics to my computer.

This is where the problem comes in : I transfered using a USB cable and got distracted and forgot the camera was still plugged in, even though the transfer had completed and had no trouble whatsoever. When I came back to the computer I noticed the camera had turned off automatically as being inactive for a few minutes, the power switch obviously still on the "On" position. I then flicked the switch to "Off" and then back to "On" a few seconds later, but noting happened. I unplugged the USB cable, repeated the "On/Off" sequence but still nothing. Tried removing the battery, charging it, removing the second battery (the watch type one that's supposed to keep time and date settings), try another memory card, went to the closest shop and tried with brand new batteries and memory card but still nothing....

So I asked Doctor Google and found that transferring directly from camera to computer might be a problem so I got myself a card reader and apparently my cards weren't the problem as I could read and transfer from them without a problem. I formatted one of the cards and tried, again, . Still nothing. So I let it lie for a time since I had other stuff to take care of (yeah I know, it sounds like I'm disinterested, but some real important stuff came up).

I recently contacted Canon, 'cause here's another twist to this story : I bought this 30D back in february 2007 when I was still living in Montreal, Canada. That being said, the warranty is void simply because I'm now on the other side of the Atlantic. Anyway, I had explained the problem to them and they answered I should send the camera to Canon France South-West Division (for those who don't know where Toulouse is, well you've guessed it, it's the main city of the south-west of France). Unfortunately this official dealer isn't in Toulouse but about 40km north of it (that's just under 25 miles). For financial reasons this means I'll have to take the train to go there. As this might not be a big deal for some, it is for me as I'm starting a 7 month mechanic training in 2 weeks, and the training facilities are located at 90km (55 miles) in another direction from Toulouse, so I'm a bit tight on the timing...

So here comes my question (finally :-D ) : Is it worth for me to go to this official dealer and have them check it and eventually fix it (which will probably cost me some, don't know how much though...) or does any of you who had enough patience to read my post know anything about this problem and might have some advice about it ?

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I know it's been painful.

By the way, I've never had any error screen or any flashing loading light (as I've read in some internet troubleshooters).

Don't worry as soon as my camera is fixed I'll up new pictures for all of you to feast your eyes on hehe....

Thanks again for reading 'till the end, I hope to contribute more to this site soon.
Cheers and happy shooting !

By the way I do hope this post is in the right section. "Cameras" seemed like the right topic...If I'm mistaken feel free to move this topic to the correct forum as I wouldn't want this to bother anyone...

Well I can't believe this, I simply just can't...But hey it's good news after all :-D . My cam is back in action ! All I did was plug the camera to the computer via the USB cable put in a charged battery and turnied it on : it worked ! Only thing was the lcd was black, the top screen flashed "busy" and the red loading lamp was also continuously flashing. To fix this new problem I simply inserted the memory card in a separate reader and cut/paste on the computer and voila ! The cam operates well again, guess the data got corrupted on the card...Oh well the problem's fixed now  .

I'll be posting pics soon then :peace:
