It looks absolutely amazing.
19 AF points
LCD overlay in view finder with configurable settings
18mp sensor (ehh...)
New 63 zone metering that supposed to really rock!
new WFT-E5 annouced with it, a new wireless transmitter
Commander mode!!! You can now completely control remote strobes from the camera with no additional accessories!
Horizon level!
True HD video that's completely manual
Just too much to list. This thing just kicked the new Nikon D300s to the curb in a major way. Finally Canon hits one out of the park!

I've long wished they'd spread those focus points out further as suggested (and illustrated) by Karel Donk (http://www.kareldonk.com/karel/2008/09/19/canon-eos-5d-mark-ii-not-all-it-could-have-been/).

It is an interesting looking camera but unfortunately it doesn't tick all my boxes. With only the centre AF point at f/2.8 sensitivity it doesn't really meet my requirements. It is good to see Canon move things forward, though!

Canadian price (Local photography shop) has the body only priced at +$2,000.00 CAD. Not sure if its worth that....unless it can make my morning coffee also.

Definitely looks pretty cool! Didn't even know they were going to launch a new beastie.

Only 1420 Euros in the store I am planning to buy it.
The 7D has less megapixels than the 5D MK II. Besides this, is there any other sognificant disadvantage ????

It will be interesting to see the high ISO noise performance. They're claiming sensor advances but that's an awful lot of pixels to squeeze onto a APS-C sized sensor.

Glenn, so with the 7D I would be able to use my Canon 17-85 lens ???

Yup, still a 1.6x crop camera.
High ISO performance will be interesting to see. Having used the 50D, I was pretty impressed; so if they could improve on that with more pixels, that will be awesome :)

Yes, it will use any lens in the Canon line-up - both EF and EF-S.

To be honest, the only disappointing spec on this body is the 18mp sensor. I've posted some links in this thread: http://www.kwanonians.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=101&p=394#p394 to some sample images. The performance is good, heck maybe even what you might call impressive. It easily beats the D300 in high ISO performance and based upon initial tests it approaches the performance of the 5DMk2 up to ISO 6400 for $1k less.
Go here: http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM
Select the 7D from one drop down and select the D300, 5DMk2 or even 1DMk3 from the other drop down and look at the sample images. The 7D is quite impressive.
I would have rather seen them keep it at 15mp or even reduce it to 12mp and go for vastly improved ISO performance and dynamic range. Rumor has it that Nikon is about to announce a new D700 that will have amazing high ISO capabilities. If Nikon pulls it off, they will own the market for the next generation of mid-tier FF bodies. They already put a major dent in Canon's once commanding lead in the market with their D700 and D3.
As for the features, I'm impressed with them and wish I had many of them on my 5DMk2. I was really-really hoping for the then rumored 19 point AF system in my 5D2 and was really let down when I didn't get it. That would have made this already great camera uber-great.
The 7D is going to be a great body and I look forward now to the 1DMk4 and the 5DMk3 down the road.

Good info, thanks! Hadn't looked around enough yet :) Sample definitely gives a nice illustration of capability!
..time to go do some internet poking....

Here's what super cool / scary (since I'm a 5D2 owner):
7D:

Now the 5D2:
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m167/tharmsen/Forums/Kwanon/5dii6400.jpg
In the 7D and D300 comparison shots it looks as though the D300 had some noise reduction done either in camera (most likely) or external. Smeared hair on the cheek and background smear distract from the base photo
As I am unfamiliar with the D300 is it not possible to turn the noise reduction off?
As for it being scary if I had the dollars I would have the full frame with wide angle lens and the "C" sensor with a telephoto allowing many less lens changes in the field.
As of now I am waiting for the lottery to begin shopping.

Another potential 7D buyer checking in... The samples are very impressive for an 18mp APS-C sensor! Other improvements are equally impressive. Time will tell how well the real world performance is. This is an interesting camera!

Is that model in the photos a manikin or a real person?

It's a manikin which probably explains the odd flesh tones.

Looks like a wax figure.
I will get the 7D as soon as it gets in the shop.
