Thats a simple "you pays yer money you takes yer choice" question and answer

This link does a side by side comparison
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos7d%2Cnikon_d300s&show=all

Canon have a larger range of lens to choose from ............

But other than that, the choice is 101% yours
Good luck!

John

Never used Nikon so I cannot compare. Just got a 7D up from a 20D, and am in heaven. Still a long way to go to get to know it....but so far....excellent and then some.

Good Luck

I know I'm in a minority, but unless you already have Nikon or Canon gear you might want to look at a Pentax system. Their cameras and lenses are good values in the market place and they produce fine quality images. There are thousands of legacy lenses available for not a whole lot of money as well. Just my ¢¢.

I'm from the dark side, so I would always vote for Nikon, but John said the choice is totally yours. Check out that link he gave you. Weigh your pro's and con's. But either one would make me a happy snapper.

Both are excellent cameras, so my advice would be to go somewhere that you can put both in your hands. It may be that you like the feel of one better than the other.

HOW DOES IT FEEL IN YOUR HANDS?

Thats the only question that matters, in my humble opinion.

Here's a message you really don't want to hear.

You're going about it entirely the wrong way.

See, told you that didn't want to hear it.

There really isn't much to choose between a Nikon D300 and a Canon 7D (or a Pentax whatever for that matter). Even if there was much of a difference who cares? The cameras are going to be obsolete in 18 months at best and the replacement model for each will be on the market in less than 9 months.

Whatever lenses you buy, on the other hand, will still be doing the same good job 20 years from now. If you're at all serious about photography you will also find that you'll end up spending way more money on lenses than you do on the camera body. So why are you not considering which lenses suit your needs exactly and then buying a camera body that fits them?

Frankly, a dSLR forms part of a system that consists of lenses and accessories such as flashes, cable releases, filters etc. etc. etc.. The camera body itself is only part of that system (and not even the most expensive or important part) so why are you thinking about basing a major decision on the minor differences between two camera bodies? Does that make any kind of sense?

Go to Best Buy or any store that has them on display and don't ask any question because they don't know anything.
Try out the higher end cameras and see which you like best.
Glenn is right, but you need to also like the way the camera feels in your hands.

Well, which one did you choose? And we also expect pictures. Pics of the new camera and pics FROM the new camera!

I have to say I've hated the way every Canon has felt in my hands until I picked up the 7D. It just felt...different. I don't shoot Canon, but if I did thats the camera I'd go with.

I didn't want to spoil the surprise until I actually bought one, but the 7D just fit in my hands-also I may be able to snake the lens off my fathers old cannon slr, I wont know more about it untill he mails it up to me.
