I'm posting this tonight because I'm off early in the morning with the DD and the grands to go to the zoo in Columbia, SC. I want to make sure to get this up. Good luck this week everyone. I want to see lots of pictures.

Thanks, everyone. I was really please with this one. The light was perfect. Wasn't super late in the day, but the sun had dropped over just enough to cast perfect light on that stone. It acted as the perfect reflector.

Alan and Ali, I have 3 or 4 more shots of these lions where the male's head is down on the rock. He just lifted it up for a couple seconds to look at us. lol

Drive home tonight...spitting rain/snow, windshield wiper not on yet.... stuck in traffic...what a wonderful time to take photo's....and a little conversion to B+W. Color looks ok but B+W seems more dramtic.

Linda, I like the composition. The focus seems to be on your mouth. Your eyes appear a little soft to me. I think self portraits are so hard to do. Cudos to you for trying them.
Shorty - you captured her bored look well. The WB appears off. It's a little too yellow for me.
Bishop
01-19-2010, 08:03 PM
Tom, you nailed the bored expression. I love it!
Thanks Monnie. It is VERY difficult to get focus where you want it doing self portraits. I keep trying. Why? I have no clue, LOL!
yellalablady

Guess I won't ride with you Michael. Why in world weren't your wipers on? That windshield would make me crazy. lol It takes you that long in evening.
Linda this is a nice portrait, but last week's was more fun. Monnie said the focus was off, but to me it is more like that style (can't think of the name right now). It does make you look a little older than the one last week, but a whole lot younger than the first one. :-)
Nice picture Shorty. You really captured a mood. :-) These are always fun to take.

Monnie, love your lions. What nice posers they were. Tom, like your candid. I would do a color correction to her skin. It is a tad yellow. Linda, I like the self-portrait. Up close and personal even if it has a soft focus. Michael, your image reminds me of all the things I don't like about winter. Bad visibility, snow, traffic and any kind of work...lol! Matthew That is a nice picture. Would like to take a walk there. Reminds me of an outhouse, but it must be the luxury size. :-)
Monnie she has her own plate, when my husband eats supper. Maybe that's why my dog, is his dog in reality. She is standing on a sheet of plywood set on top of wooden spools. Used to have an old picnic table, but it slowly fell apart over time. Will get you a shot next week of the rest of the set up, cat included. lol

Great Eagle pics Steve, The Zoo? Cheater lol I had to pass by an eagle in a field a couple of weeks ago, my 135mm would have got a beautyful framed photo, we were on the highway with no place to stop :-(

Isaac - love the lighting on this shot. Were you using a lightbox?
Peg - Great conversion. I hope you weren't driving. lol
Brian - took me a minute to find Wiley. Is that the same root as your last shot like this?
sacstoy02gt
01-21-2010, 07:32 PM
Monnie, I guess you could call it a lightbox...
I took a big heavy cardboard box, cut out the sides and top, put translucent material in the cutouts and then put white foamboard on the bottom and back. I then shined some homemade lights into it.
So, I guess that's a lightbox. It's a box + lights :)

Skippy, that is one determined dog. Nice shot. Did you use high ISO, I am seeing some camera noise on my end.
Matthew, I'm not seeing lens flare here. Lovely landscape, nice focus and color, would like to see the shed a bit off centered maybe?
Isaac, beautiful shot, you really set it up well and the light is nice.
Sage, moving car, WOW. I'm impressed. Were you driving as well? I've attempted that and they never really come out very well.

Sage Sure can't tell the road is bumpy. It's so nice level. Looks like a very gray day. The picture didn't come up for you? I don't know why. It's at the same place as the others. Oh by the way
I intend to shoot a lot more b & w this year. YOu don't shoot it you convert it. Unless you are going back to film. LOL
Brian That is a nice sharp picture. But was thinking on a different coyote. :-)
Alan great fog shot. In the fog you are not suppose to see a lot detail. That's why it's called fog. :-)
And as to my picture, it was just a quick grab shot. Couldn't out or she would have gotten down, did not have time to get finger prints off the window, left by my grandson. lol Ali there is no no more edit to it. You know once we were out walking and she charged thru the hedge row into the next field. The guy who was plowing at first thought he was seeing a bear. :-) and he knows her.

Ruth - what great DOF. What are those? They remind me of the glass slides for the microscopes that I had to clean as a college student working in the Science dept. at college.

Ruth, not only great DOF, it's a great optical illusion. This morning I would have sworn they glass slides stacked on top of one another. When I opened it just now, I could definitely tell they were pencils. At first I thought you had changed the picture. Well done, my friend.

Well, another busy week for me again and I have only just managed to catch up with all of this. I also went out and took some pics this morning, but unfortunately just before midday which is not good (especially after seeing that wonderful example posted by Amber)
Anyway, here goes:
Monnie - great capture of the lions, although I must say the big mister in the middle doesn't seem too happy with you. I like the fact that you have so much definition on the animals, even though they are a similar colour to the background, excellent work.
Micheal (Ishlove) - yuk, yuk and yuk again! If I had to go to work in that I may never drag myself out of bed. You are a brave man - well captured. Brrrrrrrr!!
Linda - well done, and very brave. I much prefer the one in the blue jumper, you have a wonderful impish look on your face in that one which, in my opinion, makes it a better photograph due to the character coming through. Does that make sense?
Tom - that poor girl is just so bored and you captured it well.
Steve - good capture of the eagles, they look a bit nasty to me!!
Michael B - what a contrast to your daughter, he looks like a real little boy! You have captured him well and I love the colours, they compliment his personality.
Skippy - I was so convinced that dog was a polar bear, I am glad to see I wasn't the only one. Looks like a great character. Not a great picture technically, but a pretty good snapshot, especially through glass, and one you will be glad to keep I think.
Matthew - I don't see any lens flare. As the shed is almost in the centre, and therefore I assume the main subject, it would be nice to see a little more detail on it I think.
Isaac - nice shot. Where's your bike?? Looking forward to your post about making a light box.
Peg - I can't believe you got that out of a car window, well done.
Brian - very funny, who is this little figure, I have never heard of him before.
Alan - excellent , I love your bridge shot, it really sums up how fog feels.
Mark - just you wait. In a few months we will be having summer here and it will be winter with you. I am going to send you pictures of all the food I cook on my BBQ, just to get my own back!!
Ali - very good indeed for a first 'fruit shot'.
Ruth - a good example of DOF. I am torn between thinking it is a little too exaggerated and thinking that it is an excellent shot. Whichever way you look at it, technically it is well managed and as you say, a little DOF practice never does any harm.

Ruth - Love the pencils! I remember doing some colored pencil shots last year. Those are fun to play with.

Here is my photograph for this week, just in time, phew! Another church, this one is in my town, I live just outside here in the countryside.
As I said before, I went out today during the late morning and ended up taking this in the midday sun, hence it is a little flat and not at all good. I will attempt this and some more of the area at a better time of day before too long.

Polly, I know what you mean. I knew it was going to be a severe DOF shot, but I wanted to try it, and also used manual focus which I have to admit I've always been really lazy at. I have to admit I was pleased to have nailed the focus in the centre.
Your roofscape shot taken in harsh light is wonderful IMO. You've really kept a staggering amount of detail in those beautiful italian roof tiles, and the tower has great colouring.

Great capture Jim, been a while since I have been in the woods, there is so much plant life you can caputer.

Interesting looking fungi Jim, is the green colouring part of it or is that some other kind of growth on the twig. Good light for a drizzly day.

My great grandparents were from Sicily.
The branch was hanging about 18 inches off the ground. The green on the limb is moss. Nothing has been rotated and other than some vibrance and spot sharpening, and a crop off the frame left side little has been done.
I went out specifically to get a shot today for this weeks entry and had to wade through a muddy field (over my boots to the bottom lacing) to get to this place.
Everyone is doing well to keep up the postings with interesting photos.

Ryan - that centrepiece has a crazy fireworks feel to it.
Polly - I wouldn't worry tooo much about the time of day & shooting the church. Tis a marvelous scene. Personally I think that far tooo many togs avoid shooting in harsh conditions, rather then trying to learn how to use that lighting to their own advantage. No arguments that 'golden' hour produces lighting that works with the majority of scenes, but imho learning how to shoot when the going gets tough is what sorts the good from the great tog's.
Ruth - love the deep saturated colours in the pencils.
Ali - nice lighting. Any hints as to your lighting setup? I'm guessing single softbox only?
Alan - quite like the feel of the bridge disappearing into the fog. Almost want to add a bit more grain / grittiness to it.
Brian (Griswold) - subtle is right!! - didn't notice Wile E hiding off in the background at first. Perhaps adding a spot more light onto him may have helped.
*Seeing him in the b/g though has given me a bit of an idea though. Might see how many of times I can 'sneak' something unobtrusive like this into other photo's throughout the year.*

Jim, your image really portays well the dampness of the day. I can almost smell the mustyness of the forest.
Aaron, great DOF on the guitar; I love that you shot straight down the neck.
Ryan, the centrepiece candles give off a lovely soft light, and the top part of the arrangement really looks like a firework!
Alcan, I really like your Chicago shot. That railing really leads the viewer into the image, and the BW option gives a very wintry feel to the whole thing.

I didn't get alot of chances to shoot in week #3. Here's a shot from the Girl Scout meeting held at our house on MLK day. The girls are working on a blanket that will go to the Crisis Center. Each girl also took a blanket home to work on and return at their nest meeting.
This weekly photo project has really got me doubting my skills as a photographer:(
No matter what I envision or how many shots I get, I can't seem to find a shot worthy of posting.

Nice capture of a great project. Not sure what else you could have done other than stand on a chair and maybe look down a little more. You did a good job on white balance and I can't get over the fact that you shot this with no flash at 1/30. :-) If it were mine it would be really blurry at speed. Glad you could do it.
