In Photoshop, Go to Filter, and Artistic, you will see Pencil effect...

Hi Gail,

I find that combining a layer that has the 'standard' pencil filter and the original works very well - you need to work with blending modes and opacity, but it stops it from looking like a computer generated pencil drawing...

Bear in mind for shaded pencil work, that very few artists make all the strokes go in one direction... if you do some selective erasing or masking with multiple layers, with differing stroke angles, you get a much more realistic, pleasing result...

Another option to look into is the Virtual Painter plugin from Jasc Software - a trial version is available, it has a number of effects from Oil painting and watercolour, all of which have plenty of variables and an excellent preview - it has three drawing modes... using that, and some layer effects can give you a truly original 'pencil' drawing...

Cheers,
Stuart
