Please vote for Challenge #52 "Wheels".
Thanks all for some fantastic entries. As always there can only be 5 that are placed into the final for voting. Sorry to all the great images that didn't make it! There are certainly some very creative photographers out there!
Please take the time to take a look over the final 5 pictures below and vote for your favourite, I've checked that all these images meet the rules of the competition, and I've included the theme definition below to help you.
If you're new to photozo then please sign up and register and place your vote, you'll like it here!
If you're entry didn't make it to the final 5 and you want to know why the please PM me and I'll be happy to offer critique and feedback by return PM.
Thanks again for all the great entries!!! :)
Theme Definition:
The challenge this time is to take a photo of something with wheels. It doesn't have to be a car, it could be a bus, lorry, office chair, etc etc.
It can be anything, as long as the subject of the photo has wheels, but note that the wheel itself does not need to be in the photo.
The most important thing is that it's an interesting and strong photo in iitself.

You're correct Neil! You had a very difficult task, and there were some excellent images that are not finalist. Very difficult to choose. Congratulations to all who took the time and effort to enter.

Congratulations to all participants for their excellent work, with extra kudos to the finalists. It was VERY hard to vote given not only the quality of the images, but also the creativity. Neil - kudos to you for posting the finalists images on in the members' gallery section to "get the vote out". May I suggest you do a couple of re-posts during the open voting stage. It will be interesting to see if you get a good voter turnout.

Contratulations to the final five. Once again the choosing is not easy, but it's got to be done. Good luck to all of you.

All excellent images, including the ones that never made it to the top five, even though they were fully complied with the challenge rules. I hate to be the one making any noise over this, but I don't see image rotation as one of the permitted altering/editing steps in the challenge rules section. Maybe I have to read the rules better and I missed something here. If I did misunderstand, than I do apologize for the noise! :-)

Interesting question John,
I think image rotation is allowed by definition, i.e. when you take a picture with your camera in portrait setting then need to rotate the image by 90 degrees on the computer to make it look right again, you have in fact rotated the image. There's no rule saying all photos must be landscape only! ;)
Sorry if I'm being obtuse....
Another way to think about it would be if you were displaying some photos in a gallery or on your wall, maybe you've simply got some prints from film but decide to deliberately display one picture updside down.... have you edited the picture? No, not at all. Just displayed it differently and with a bit of artistic flair. Photozo is simply an online gallery, and if someone decided their photo should be upside down then so be it, It shows imagination!
So, I think it's perfectly allowed. I'd say that B+W conversion and cropping of orignal photos is a far greater edit than a simple rotation.
As I've the luxury of being chief judge for this challenge I get to choose thefinal 5, and these are my five. Vote for your favourite!
Thanks all for the votes and comments so far!
Neil.

Neil - kudos to you for posting the finalists images on in the members' gallery section to "get the vote out".
Hmm, that's an unintended side effect that I didn't think of! I created the thumbnail collection as I though it's always good to see the finalists side by side, I was forgetting it would also appear as a new gallery image! Well, handy advertising as you say!
Thanks,
Neil.

Neil, According to Shouchen's challenge rules these are the allowed changes;
"Digital manipulations
All entries should limit the use of digital manipulations to only file conversion, level, curve and sharpening. Adding elements to the original image that were not there are NOT allowed. Occasionally, we can call on a Digital Creativity competition. "
I would also understand a slight rotation to straighten an image or making a portrait to landscape by performing a 90 degrees rotation as a necessity. However purposely rotating a photo by 180 degrees to alter it's appearance this way might not be considered as a necessary change or correction. I am just going according to the written rules, as most of us do.

John,
I see your point. But also note that the rules don't say you can't rotate the image, even 90 degrees for portrait pics.
Though you can imagine that all rules may be interpreted differently by different people. Both by the people entering the challenge but also in the judging. My interpretation as a judge is that the main and most important rule and concept is:
Adding elements to the original image that were not there are NOT allowed.
i.e. if this were taken on film, then the actual image captured by the camera, onto the film (or sensor in this case) should not be modifed. In the case of a rotation, the photo i.e. what has been captured, has not been modified in any way.
I've entered a lot of the bi-weekly challenges here since I joined during challenge 14 back in november 2003! I've seen many many many posts discussing what is and isn't allowed and appropriate for the bi-weekly challenge, all that considered, I believe my final 5 are fair.
If you don't like a picture, then don't vote for it - that's democracy! There have been too many people who have fallen out on discussions like this, Let's agree to dissagree, I find it very upsetting to have to "argue" like this :-(

Another perspective would be that the picture could have been taken with the camera and not rotated. Maybe the camera was held upside down!!!!

Neil, Pls don't be upset. You made your point and I understand. You also worked hard on this which I truly admire. I go with the flow and now I know we can rotate than. :-) Perhaps we should include this in the rules, so it is clear for everybody in the future?! Just a thought. This was a big challenge and many talented entries got posted. Again, I congratulate to everyone who entered. Cheers!

It's my entry! Thanx for the comments Jan..
First thing in my mind when rotating the image, is it OK or not?
But if during the shooting and I turn my camera upside down, there's no difference..
So then, I shoot the subject "as is" then do the image later w/ the PS..
No furtehr manipulation occur...
Anyway I'm happy to be one of the top 5 in this challenge...
GODLUCK TO BOTH OF US!
Neil thanx for the this challenge, it's not easy to find the subject that suit for good composition..
HAVE a very nice day!

Ed,
Maybe some other new digital cameras have the "auto-rotation" feature, which is good enough when viewing the image in your camera you will not rotate your camera upside down or turning ur head sideways..:)
Have a nice day

You should patent your idea - while we may be jesting now, I've had a couple of tight situations where I placed the camera on the ground then TRIED to see through the view finder! Regardless, it is good to see John's concerns addressed, your entry meeting the criteria and Neil accepting the idea that the rules need to be clarified a bit. Now may the best photo win!!!

<Results will be visible after the poll expires> Is this new? I'd swear, the running total popped up the second vote was cast.
Everyone is correct - each of the 5 finalists is a terrific picture. Had to laugh at my choice, though (had a hard time selecting but the Plane Truth is - I was having a Freudian moment! )
I've missed working on the challenge (been helping family members and haven't had much time to hit the camera trail lately.)
Am I missing something, but after the five are chosen, I'd like the opportunity to revisit all the entries (even for a short time). Are they archived for a little bit? This is especially true during those weeks when time doesn't allow me to view all of them until it's too late.
Good Luck to you all. Kathy

Here you go Kathy ... http://www.photozo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14631
Just look in the bi-weekily challenge forum index. Lot's of members will delete their pictures to free up attachment space if they aren't chosen for the final so you may not see all of the entries.

Talking of deleting attachments, a special note to the final 5, it would be really really great if you guys could not delete your attachments for pictures that get into the final, I think it's really nice to be able to look back at the final 5 for previous challenges.... note that you can re-submit an attachement with the attachment control panel if you want to downsize it, i.e. reduce size and increase jpeg compression to get you a little more room.
Though the final 5 are always 'archived' as it were onto the "exhibit" section, see this link (http://www.photozo.com/challenge/list.php?exhibition=54&pass=public&lang=eng) or use the "exhibit" button at the top menu bar on photozo....
Regarding the hidden voting, well there's an option when you create a poll to make it hidden, I find it's a little more interesting and exciting to find out who wins right at the end! ;)
Thanks!
Neil.
