Well, we are back from our wonderful trip to Boston. We had a great time, and I just had to tell everyone here..... NEVER go shopping with Landis!!! Just kidding....TAKE LANDIS WITH YOU!!!!

When Landis picked Brad and I up from the airport, our first stop was to see Landis' Digital Guru, Ted Dillard of JP Levine Photo. Ted showed us the new Epson printers, and I learned a lot from him. Anyone who is considering investing in a printer, would do very well visiting with Ted.

After seeing Landis' printer in action, Brad was getting very excited about printing...and about ME getting a printer. So, yesterday, after we returned from Cape Cod, on the way BACK to the airport.....with just an hour to spend at Levines talking to Ted..... we discovered that yesterday was the last day of the big rebate on an Epson printer. So.... because of that, the fact that Ted was able to arrange for Epson to drop shop the printer to me in ND, (no shopping costs to me at all) and not having to pay any sales tax.... I saved a HUGE amount of cashola....and I bought a printer!!!

We debated about which one to get, and didn't get as big of one as Landis has, but I am sure that I will LOVE my new printer!! All of the images that we printed out at the printing workshop were printed on 17" paper, on Landis' 24" printer, so we decided to go with the 17" printer. BRAD actually was considering the 24 inch printer, but Landis thought that the 17 inch one was going to be more than ample for what I would need, so that is what we are getting!!!

It should be here in a couple of weeks!!! I am so very excited. I really do need to thank Landis for all of his help and expertise in printing, and his recommendation.

So....thank you Landis for introducing me to Ted, and teaching me how to print beautiful images and for sharing your knowledge with us!!! We really appreciate it!!!

The printer should be here in a couple of weeks!!!

Well....Off to Office Max...gotta get a couple of tubes....I have prints to mail to Ericvz, Brad Towery, and BruceP. Vonnie....We FedEx'ed yours yesterday!!!!

Thanks again Landis for taking Brad and I to meet Ted. YOU saved us LOTS of money!!!!!

Tracy

ps...... very excited :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Well, I really must correct Tracy's choice of a title for this thread. It should have been "If you go shopping TAKE Landis with you!" When they first arrived in Boston, they were thinking "small" like the Epson R2400 printer, which is really a top notch printer. Then Brad started looking at my printer and drooling just a little and had that gleam in his eye. We talked off and on the whole time they were here about the pros and cons of different printers, different papers, etc. Brad got a good education here, which is good. He got really excited, however I must say posing with Faust's two lovely models with the Pepsi cans (Brad's brother works for Pepsi) really got Brad into the swing of things.

The real clincher was Epson's BIG rebate that ended yesterday, so they bought the Epson Pro 4800. For those who don't know, the new Ultra Chrome K3 inks, with the Black, Light Black and Light Light Black inks are perfect for both color and B&W prints.

While here, I calibrated Tracy's monitor for her, so it's ready for quality printing!!!

So, now, Tracy will not have the Winter Frumpies and can print to her heart's content up in the Great Frozen Tundra of Fargo, ND.

I recall the only thing I thought would get in the way of your having a gallery show was the expense of printing enlargements for the show! Now you might learn how to mount these big prints so they don't sag in their frames. I like foamcore, or (if the edges will show) black gatorfoam.

Congratulations! If anyone needs a big printer, it's you!

You are 100% Correct!!!! I will change the title of this thread immediately!!!! Thanks again for all of YOUR expertise, and teaching me how to print. It really did help to have Brad posing with those lovely models...he thinks he is a star now, and wants to have a big print of it made for his office!!!

Kudos Tracy on the new printer. I share a Epson 4000 with my Dad, and it rocks, it prints out just as well as my pro lab. Saves me lots of money. So I can only image the quality of the 4800. You go Girl.

So when are you coming "Down under "Landis and help us "Under Privelidged" out? YOu have to be fait you know and share yourself around. I am just jealous. Now I always thought you lived in Panama? I am totaly confused as to who went where and who lives where now.

Ralph, Send me a ticket and I'll be on my way!!! I would love to go Down Under. Never been there, but it sounds wonderful. I do live in Panama, but have a 2nd home in Massachusetts where I spend some of the year. How much time depends on what's happening at the lead smelter. There are so many nice Aussies on the Zo, it would be fun to meet them too.

Okay.... so here is an update on my printing situation!!!! I have this awesome Epson printer on the way....and trying to figure out where to put it!!! My options include the following.

1. Kick "college boy" out of his room, and relocate everything into his room. When we origionally built our home, this room was our den, and it is not really very big for a bedroom, but works for him. His rent is very cheap (aka FREE). We would have to have him move in with our other 12 year old son, and they would have to share a room. Which by the way is a very BIG bedroom. The den, aka "college boy's room, is just off our family room downstairs.

2. Kick "college girl" out of her room... Have her move downstairs with our youngest daughter. Probably not a great option...as if we did that...she probably would move in with her boyfriend..and believe me...we don't want to go there!!!

3. Take my dining room, and transform it into my new printing area. We don't use the dining room very often...as we also have an eat-in kitchen. (Holiday's, big family gatherings, etc....) so this probably would be the best option if I didn't want to relocate any of my children to a different bedroom.

Right now, I have just a lap top computer that I use for my photos...BUT ..... I do think that I am going to be investing in a new Apple of some sort that will be a more permament fixutre.

Our house is a bi-level...so we have a family room downstairs, where the kids hang out, and a living room upstairs, where Brad and I watch TV, and have friends over, relax, etc. The dining room is just to the side, kind of off of the living room, so I would still be involved with what Brad is doing in the living room. I really don't want to invade the kids' turf...as #1, don't want to have to worry about things getting damaged...and #2..when I set up my photo lights..they go in the family room, and #3 don't want to be so far removed from what Brad is doing upstairs....

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Other than selling this house and buying a larger house.....different kind of floor plan.... cause if I sell this house...I AM MOVING to the lake full time!!!! (which really isn't an option right now!)

Tracy, it is your house and you do what you want with your castle. Don't consider visitors or what they may think. Ruth and I have taken over the family room, located at the back of the house where we exit to go to the back yard. She has a huge desk set up for her sewing machine and overlocker and I have my largish computer desk set up. Yes it gets untidy at times, (not dirty, just untidy) but heyn it's where we "play and thats the way we like it. If visitors don't like it they needn't come back! :-) so my advice is leave your kids alone or you will create world war 3 with territorial issues and just use your dining room if it suits. Spread out and be comfortable, you buy your house to use for yourself so use it. We pay enough for them, goodness knows, so get your monies worth. Just my 2 bobs worth!

weeprecious
11-04-2005, 06:21 PM
no well i guess not lol silly suggestion, sounds like your dining room just became a printing room, we have a spare bedroom that was made into an office for the computer and all the officey type stuff we have lol but i eventually moved it back down and into the living room as i was all alone up there and i prefer to be around Sandy, sounds like you are similar, so i'd go with the dining room idea :-D

jdog
11-04-2005, 06:37 PM
It wasn't a silly suggestion at all Sharon....just won't work until about 6 months from now. We had actually talked about doing something like that .... but it just won't work until spring.

Thanks Ralph.... I really do believe you are right. World War 3 would be starting here shortly if I relocated any of the natives to different quarters. Holiday gatherings are over-rated anyway!!! But then....there is always either just an appitizer menu or a buffet line vs. a formal sit-down meal.

Did I mention that my wine fridge is in the dining room? That alone could be worth having the printer in the dining room!!! :fire: :fire: :fire:

Part of our problem is also that we adopted one of our foster children AFTER we built this house...so for everyone to have their own room now.... College Boy took over the den once he found out that it was very expensive to live on his own and attend college.

rkunderhill
11-04-2005, 06:37 PM
The same here Sharon, I was in the extra bedroom with my computer office, and very lonely. So I moved into the living room to be near Charlie. So Tracy I would convert you dining room, especially if you don't use it much to eat and it is right next to the living and you will be close to hubby.

11-04-2005, 09:04 PM
Place it on the dining room table, right at the middle! lol but seriously Tracy, don't you have a basement office? That printer is hopefully not so large that you'd need a separate room for it. I am sure you'll find a good place for it. ;-)

jdog
11-04-2005, 09:08 PM
College Boy is sleeping in the downstairs office/den. So...If i take over the dining room....there is no dining room table any more...it will need to be gone. I will make Brad build me a custom desk work space that will have room for my printer, computer, and workspace for "stuff." Hopefully I will have some cashola left over to buy myself a "bosses chair" cause they are really comfy!!!!

And don't forget....my wine fridge!!! :fire: :fire: :fire:

John, it's a big printer. My Dad has a 4000, and it's about 48" wide, and about 36" Deep and about a foot high. It is a monster and heavy, weighs about 60 tp 70 lbs.

Landis
11-05-2005, 07:54 AM
Yes, it is huge: To be precise, it's 33.4" W x 14" H x 30" Deep and weighs 89 pounds, certainly not something you want to move around very much unless you have it on a stand with casters on it. My 7600 has casters on the stand, but it doesn't move around at all.

You can read all about it by going to the Epson.com site and downloading the manual for it, which I have done. I'm sure I will be getting calls from the Frozen Tundra when Tracy gets her printer. LOL!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Well, as Tracy's main Tech Support, I have been telling her that once it is out of the box and set up, the inks installed and the paper roll fed into the right slots, it's a piece of cake. These printers are really easier to use than the small ones, that seem to jam all the time and ink jets clog. The fact that you don't have to change ink cartridges all the time simply because they are BIG and last a long time.

From there on, it's simply following the Color Management Workflow system on each photo you work with to print.

sounds too simple to be true Landis.

Monty

Landis
11-08-2005, 09:33 PM
Well, I tell you truthfully. Once I have my profiles done and everything calibrated. I seldom have to make a second print as the first one is right on the money. Only problem is when I switch papers. Consistancy in workflow is the key to all this.

rkunderhill
11-08-2005, 09:48 PM
Monty I have to jump in here, Landis was kind enough to send me his personal printer profiles. Once I loaded them, They print beautifully for my prints. However, I have not had a chance to test them for my Dad's work (he does a lot of B&W). But my prints I do a test print for the paper, then I can print all day long. And this was not from a profile I set up, it was from Landis, and all I did was calibrate my monitor. So yes it is that simple and easy.

So share them around or does it only work for Epsom printers and not humble old Canon i965's? lol
Whilst on printing, anyone silly enough to have some printed by the stores>? I did once and my blue skies ended up purple!! Now was that me or them? Because when I printed the same picture on the Canon at home it was perfect?

rkunderhill
11-09-2005, 03:54 AM
I don't know if Landis's profiles will work on anything but an Epson, but He would know better than anyone. As for Prolab printing, my pro lab, sent me their printer profile for when I need a big job, and I just did the same thing as I did with Landis's ones. So those particular prints are being printed to the profile set to that printer.

Landis
11-09-2005, 06:33 AM
Sorry, folks, but my profiles will work only on the Epson Pro 4000, 7600, and 9600 printers. In Panama I have them for my Epson Stylus 2200.

All my profiles are printer/ink/paper specific as well as DPI settings.

As far as I know, you can build profiles for any printer. If you have a Canon or other brand, I suggest you go to their web sites and see if they have profiles in their support section. Some may and probably most will not.

If you are taking files in to your local cheap printing shops, keep the color space to sRGB, which is your normal camera files. All places like that are set up for that color space.

Ralph, if your skies were really off, and other work they are doing have correct skies, my suspecion is that your monitor needs some serious calibrating.

For anyone looking at how to do your workflows, Epson has a great file you can download:
http://tech.epson.com.au/downloads/product.asp?id=styluspro4800

Pick your operating system and take a look. It's pretty much the same as I do, with just a couple minor differences, but this is good.

I don't think so Landis, I have as I said printed the same picture at home with perfect results. I have checked "what I see" against CRT's along side this LCD as well as visiting other peoples computers and checking how they see my work. If I was this far out I would be seeing glaring differences either in my own home prints or in the other monitors I view. I do know my laptop is off a bit and difficult to get to look like the PC but then I didn't pay big dollars for the laptop which is mainly used for storing photos whilst away from home.

Ralph Newman
11-09-2005, 01:57 PM
Having done this only once, thinking I would save money, it is a company in Australia called Harvey Norman's. Just have a "Fuji Lab" set up with a row of screens to selected and enter your cards/photos/ so pretty much automated. I am also very disapointed in the quality of their paper. Will continue doing my own on the Canon i965. I have to say that I am pretty happy with the job it does and it reasonably close to WYSIWYG

rkunderhill
11-09-2005, 02:15 PM
Well there you go, if ever want large prints or have an large order, find you a "Pro" lab or use mpix. From what I understand they do color correct and do an awesome job.

Landis
11-09-2005, 03:17 PM
To give you a very brief explanation on what Profiles do, is they "know" how your printer will react to different colors against a Standard Color. So if your printer (for instance) will print a little on the green side, when you work with your photo and have your image up, using Soft Proofing with your profile, it will change the appearance of your monitor image to how the printer will print it out. You make the corrections according to that standard, giving it a bit more Magenta to combat the green tint. and it will print out correctly for you.

That is why if you are using ICC profiles, it is imperative to open your image and IMMEDIATELY go to VIEW > Proof Setup > and load your profile into your system so you are working with the image AS IT WILL PRINT out with your printer.
