I am shooting a line of cosmetics. They range from glass jars and vials to tall cylindrical tubes. They all have a silver hologram label on which is printed all the text. When you hold the product in front of your face and turn or move it in any direction, you can see all the rainbow-like colors created by the hologram. I'm shooting in a 36" square soft cube, like Photo Studio In A Box, but a little better. So the light is beautifully diffused. However, my client wants to be able to see at least some of the colorful aspects of the hologram label. I'm getting great shots, but the labels always look almost totally silver. I've tried moving my lighting scheme around, using reflectors, hot lights, cool lights... but nothing seems to pick up the beautiful colors of the labels. Any suggestions? Camera is the Sony a100 10.2 MP, aperture priority setting, custom WB. I have a feeling it's all in the lighting set up, but can't figure it out.

I'd replicate the 'rainbow-like colors' in Photoshop and superimpose them on your bottle the way they appear to the consumer in regular light.

This might sound funny,,,,But can you place colored paper inside of your soft cube? (Small squares, circles?) The hologram label reflects the colors that it sees.
I think this will work...............

I'd have to test this out, but I think you are not seeing the hologram colors becuase your lights and photo cube lights are over powering the much fainter colors. One thing I would play around with is setting the bottle up so that when it is just sitting there and you can see the hologram lights thru the camera. Once you get this, take a photo with your strobes off (or hot lights if you are using those). Can you still see the colors? Now take a shot with your strobes on...are the colors still there? This will tell you if your lighting is just over powering the colors...which I think it is.

A hologram will only respond to a single light source. Have you observed that when moving an object with a hologram graphic on it, i.e. a credit card, it will become apparent at one point and disappear at another. I suggest trying only one light source and manually rotate the object until the hologram comes in to view. When you visually see it from the exact point in the view finder, click the shutter.

With correct exposure, you could use the post by Ben and then do another shot with much softer lighting and blend the two in PS for the best result.
