I'm afraid this is going to be a 'How long is a piece of string' type question but I'm after some pricing advice for one of my photographs.

I have been contacted by a UK publisher of educational books that wishes to use one of my photographs in an upcoming book.

I'm eager to find a price that is agreeable as the publication of the image means more to me at this stage than direct income. I've so far replied asking for an estimated total of the quantity to be printed and have asked the publisher to suggest a reasonable price to see if they come back with anything.

I'm basically after some advise on how I might go about working out a price that is fair to both myself and the publisher and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts. I have no idea what might be deamed reasonable for this, or what other photographers would charge.

Also I feel I should draw up a usage contract for the image and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of the things to include should this go ahead. I intend to limit them purely to the use of the image for the book specified with no other rights.

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks Jan. It's quite an exciting idea. I've made my quote based on some information that I was provided through another forum.

This seems to be a good link that may help others in the future http://www.londonfreelance.org/feesguide/phpubrat.html
