I received an email from a fellow Photozo member, and will post my answer here on the forum so others may read it and contribute their own preferences:
Hi Bruce,
I wanted to ask you, do you have a recommendation for a good flip bracket? I use a Canon 5D with a 430EX flash and will be doing some weddings and gatherings.
Thanks in advance.
Marty
I use this flip flash bracket (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=325513&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation) because it folds. I carry it everywhere. My Canon off-camera flash cord "lives" on this bracket which takes up about as much space as a medium tele lens when folded into my bag.
Most of the time I have either a Stofen OmniBounce or a Gary Fong LightSphere diffuser on my flash.
I also use both "male" and "female" RC2 quick disconnects (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=149686&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation) with the bracket. That way either of my cameras (which have an RC2 plate on the bottom) will quickly snap onto or off the flip flash bracket, and the bracket itself will quickly snap onto or off any of my tripods just as my cameras do. No screwing and unscrewing... especially in the dark where I'd be using flash.
Since you'll be using this gear professionally, I'll add something else. Since I'm paid to take pictures, sometimes of people who've travelled thousands of miles to an event, my gear just HAS to work... no excuses. Therefore, I have backups for everything: camera, flash, tripod... lenses, everything. I had a 20D and realized I needed a backup, so I bought a 5D, and now use the 20D as my backup body. I have a couple of tripods, a few dedicated flashes and two flip flash brackets (the other one is a Samigon. (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/402148-REG/Samigon_CSA843_V_H_Flip_Bracket_System.html))
I've heard of wedding photographers whose gear failed them on the wedding day and were sued for horrendous amounts of money... enough to fly everyone back to re-take the photos in the re-rented hall.
