Hi guys,

I have a new macro lens - the AF-S MICRO 60mm and started getting better (I hope). I find the auto focus horrible - just no point of using it. These were taken in our back yard. C&C are welcome and so any advice about composition and focus. I used to take macro shots with the IS S2 and with this 60mm its a whole new challenge.

In this one the flower is blurry - was not my intention but seems to me it adds dept to the photo - what do you think?

Good start with your new lens. I agree, when doing macro you might as well manual focus. Works so much better on my lens as well.

Also, you'll find that you have to be very, very still to get the clear focused shots, or use a tripod or monopod. My shots often come out a bit soft, as I'm just learning macro as well. And the wind always seems to be blowing, even the tiniest amount, to throw off the focus.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Hi Michelle!

Congratulations on your new lens! I will echo what Linda said, and indeed, manual focus, specially if you are very close to the subject. Say you find your subject, choose your composition, focus manually then slightly rock back of forth to find that ideal sweet spot where your focus should be while your shutter button is half pressed. Once you see in the viewfinder what you like - take a picture.

I try to avoid taking nature's macro shots during the wind, but if I "must" (if there is just a tiny slight breeze), again, I focus manually, frame the subject, press the shutter half way and wait till the subject comes in focus with while the breeze rocking the subject, take a picture

Hope this could be helpful.

D
