How many photos can I take?

I may become one of you instead of a spectator!

I am consider buying a digital camera. I went to the store, asked about the Kodak EasyShare LS 443, was told that for the 16 MB internal memory, 7 photos can be taken at the best resolution (4.0 megapixel picture resolution). Is that so? Isn't that very inconvenient?

My question is: If I want a 5"*7" print of ordinary image quality, how many pictures can the camera take?

Good to hear you are going digital!! The person at the store was right that for a 16MB memory card, it won't take many photos for highest setting JPG. Actually I can hardly imagine anyone would use that 16MB card. So purchase a larger memory card is almost a must. I recommend you to get the a 256MB card or at least a 128MB card. You can find these cards at BestBuy, Fries, or WalMart.

For a 4MP camera, you can take pictures at the Large/Fine (the best JPG setting of the camera), and it'll give you very good quality at 8x10 prints.

The size of the files should be close to the following:

Resolution | Type | File Size | # of photos on 256 MB Disk
2272 x 1704, Super-Fine, 1,800 KB, 131
2272 x 1704, Fine JPEG, 1,000 KB, 232
1600 x 1200, Fine JPEG, 580 KB, 442
1024 x 768, Fine JPEG, 250 KB, 763
640 x 480, Fine JPEG, 120 KB, 1400
If you want the 5x7 prints, you probably need to go with at least 1600x1200.

The final word is that I am not a big fan of Kodak. For that price range, I suggest you look at the Canon S45. And here is a detailed Canon S45 Review (http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/s45.html).

I will add my 2 cents here...I just picked up a Sandisk 256mb CF card at Costco for $56. That gets me a whopping 17 pix with my camera :lol:

Woww! Only 17 pictures on 256MB card?!! :o I read that for S.Fine TIFF 2560x1920, the file in your camera Minolta Dimage 7Hi, a 1GB Microdrive only holds 72 photos! The megapixel really makes huge difference! But, you will make great print when you get your Epson printer.... :-)

I think you are right about that first step...but once you do it I think it will change forever the way you shoot photos. Being able to instantly get feedback on the images is not only satisfying, but you know you got the shots you want. I have been a hobby photographer for over 30 years now and have always enjoyed it. Now I am absolutly in love with the Zen of taking Pictures, and because I am shooting more my technique and approach to shots has improved. The learning curve is there, but once you get on with it you are back to the primary reason one has a camera in their hands....to take pictures :-D

Yes sir that Nixvue unit looks very nice, and it looks like it would travel well too. Right now when we go out on a shoot I take my laptop with me along with a cardreader and a power inverter for the car and a trackball and a etc etc etc.. This works out pretty well but its not real convenient. It is though gonna have too work for a while though. My wife is pretty understanding of the great gear chase as she chases her far share too! She shoots 2 1/4 with her Mamiya 645 and there is always the odd lens or two that she has to have. :roll:
We have come to the conclusion that coming to an end in ones "need" for new gear is kinda like finding the end of the internet. :-)

BTW...the s. fine .tif files are about 14-15 MB. I could use .raw as they are about 9 MBs or so and squeeze a few more images onto the card but I just havent tried to yet. I guess its the post processing issues with .raw files that have put me off. Do you have any comments or ideas about .raw you want to share in the editing forum??? :?:

Wow, I didn't realize this. So the price has dropped to 1% compared to 6 years ago! You would have paid $1600 for a 8GB card back then if it is available! :shock:

This is the largest size card for your camera that Kodak sells (although this is SanDisk one of the premier manufactures of flash memory cards not Kodak brand)
I don't believe that write speed will be an issue with your camera.

I just hope the price would become very low for that 2tb card in 6 years, even now a 64GB card can cost from 200 for low performance models to thousands for hi-performance ones. And SSD drives are even worse in price.
