While waiting for a workshop client (!) I decided to take advantage of the great early morning sunlight and experimented with some silhouettes with a couple of cooperative subjects. A good exersice in getting to think outside the box (bird photography-wise anyhow).

1. Mallard + grass dew + misty pond. The white particles all around are bits of feather down floating about after a good preening session :-)

2. Great-blue Heron. I tried to include the transition in the water from orange to blue.

Wow, both are good, but #2 is just a stunner! Definitely a different view Dan, I say do some more :-)

Wow Daniel, these are beautiful! Especially the second shot. The golden 'trim' around him is wonderful. I'm glad you included the transition in the water. I hope you print this really big! The light is gorgeous, and the morning dew plays it up nicely.

I like the first one. The little white specks floating really are nice.

I like 1 and 2. Silhouettes of birds is an original Idea.

I recognize them both without i.d.

Nice muted colors in both.

Oh, WOW, Dan. These are just fabulous. I love #1. The lighting is perfect. It looks 3D. So many silhouettes have a very two dimensional look to them. The lighting around the darker duck just makes him pop out of the photo. I love the glow through the feather on the Heron. Great exercise.

I recognize them both without i.d.

That must be the secret to good silhouettes, eh? Retaining enough detail to keep the subject interesting and recognizable - without losing the rich solid of the silhouette black. The back-lighting halo of light works. Well done!
