Would two 580's with soft boxes be enough lighting for product and food photography? Im thinking about buying another 580.
Or should I get two Alien Bee's with soft boxes? Im thinking I could use the A/B's for portrait photography also.
I dont know what route to take............................ :?:

I find a 2nd 580EX to come in very handy. My first food photos were done with two 580EX's. I still use them when I need a lightweight 2-light setup, but I did have to resort buying Alien Bees to increase my depth of field. Now I have a choice of more than five f-stops.
You can use your camera-mounted 580EX as a fill light and put the other one on a light stand or have someone hold it, and set it to be the main light. The Canon ETTL will give you lighting automatically which won't look like flash. Check out this article (http://tips.romanzolin.com/articles/article027.php) about doing weddings this way (even though you don't do weddings).
At the very least, having a spare of everything is "sleep insurance."
