Very cute little munchkin. Awesome hair! I just wish we could see more of the eyes. I think the horizontal positioning would work better if you had been able to get the eyes in there giving it more of a focal point. Since it seems to be about the hair and the grin, I'd have turned the orientation to vertical.
The focus does seem to be dead on the eyes - just that the hair, spectacular as those curls are, is blocking our view.
Nice shot, though. :)

Absolutely, but I think it's best to pop it into the People forum. You get one pic a week in critique. :)

As a quick snapshot grab, it works well. But as an evocative portrait, it misses the mark somewhat. There is no central point of interest that is in sharp focus. The hair is in focus, but as Deirdre said, it covers the eyes, which are usually what draws viewers to a portrait.
You shot this at f/5.6, which resulted in a pretty shallow depth of field. Had you stopped down to f/8 or f/11, then more of the face might have been in focus, creating a fuller portrait, perhaps incorporating the blowing hair at the back of the head into the overall message. You had lots of light to let you stop down. Going from f/5.6 to f/8 would have been one stop less light, which means you'd have to have gone one stop more light in shutter speed, or 1/250 second, which is still plenty fast to avoid subject blur.
The colours are good and I like the quality of the background boken, the out of focus areas. Plus I like how you filled the frame.
This is a great kid and a great expression. I'd love to see more portrait shots, perhaps with all that marvellous hair backlit so that it creates a halo effect.
Just my opinion - hope it's helpful. Thanks for sharing this shot with us.
