My all time favorite locomotive, and my all time favorite capture of my all time favorite locomotive.
Locomotives are extremely difficult to get a nice photograph of because they are black and black sucks up light like you would not believe. A slightly overcast day with the diffused sunlight striking the same side of the locomotive that you are photographing is ideal, or sunshine streaming across the front of the locomotive and bouncing off of a large white building or something and then back into thje shadow side. Also if the locomotive is a large one (like this one) I have found that if I stand up on something high so I can shoot pretty much straight in to the engine it will look better than an image taken while standing on the ground. I carry a 10 foot step ladder when I'm going to photograph large locomotives. Sure it looks pretty stupid to be standing on a stepladder out in the middle of nowhere, but who cares it is the shot that is important.
