The winner of the inaugural Project Challenge is:
Andy Purviance with his photograph "Youth Meets Youth"
Congratulations Andy (my you've had a big week!)
Can you let us all in on how you did it, I personally have never been able to work with my eraser set on "human hair"
Congratulations Andy! I guess it helped to have some "praying" on your side. :-)

Those were some very good entries. I'll have to think hard on what digital challenge to pose to you all.
In the mean time, let me try to remember the steps. The photo was one I had tanken that day, without thinking of the challenge. But, once I saw it on screen I thought it fit the theme.
For the desaturated skin, I added a channel mixer layer in Photoshop. Checked "Monochrome" and set the Red, Green, Blue values to 33% each, and adjusted from there to get the grayscale look just right. But, I wanted a slight warmth to the highlight around the bug. So, I copied and pasted the photo into the Channel Mixer layer's mask, using the photo's own light and dark to mask the effect. Then adjusted the mask's levels until the color looked good.
I then took the paint brush and masked out the bug so that it would reveal it's full color. But, I added a Hue & Saturation adjustment layer to increase the color satruation. Then copied and pasted the bug's mask so that only the bug was over saturated.
If I've over simplified any steps beyond understanding please ask for more details.
Now, about that next challenge, hmm ....
