Ah... 944 Turbo, very nice! My S2 is in the dog-house at the moment. Too many little niggles being found so I'm taking the Golf out this weekend for a few days of stress-free motoring.

    Ah, another Porsche driver.

In summer I drive a 944 turbo S silver rose. It comes out on 15 April as that is the approximate date of the last snow here. I am a track instructor with PCA.

PCA club race at Lime Rock Park is on 29-30 April and I am going to take photographs of fellow track rats.

Thanks, a very good read indeed. It is always nice to stay fresh on the meaning of our photo vocabulary.

Thanks for writing this Glenn. Very well written. I see the term bokeh used so much for shallow depth of field. It's nice to understand the real meaning.

The BMW has a sequential gear shift that demands (my excuse) feeding the power - switch off the traction control (DTC) then the beast is awoken and the pleasure maximised.

So far there are no bits of hedge wedged in the rear bumper - but the brakes have suffered in silence a few times............

    Enjoy!

Heh... well the S-02s aren't THAT bad in the wet, it's just that they're "awesome" in the dry and merely "good" in the wet. If you push them in the wet the way you can in the dry you will come unstuck.

Toque steer is possible but I always feed in the power in a controlled fashion. It's just a good habit to have. Whilst the Golf has traction control to take the edge off any foolishness the Porsche eschews such girly frippery. Too much exuberance with the throttle in that will end up with me heading off backwards through a hedge.

Great explanation Glenn! I've heard the term abused just as you describe it. Hopefully this helps some people understand the differences between DoF and bokeh.

The mid range torque of the TDi is something never to be underestimated. On motorways it allows understated cars with a TDi to rip out those who 'think' they drive bigger morsels - only to discover in a belch of carbon dust they have been outwitted by a diesel.

The 'tweaks' you have achieved make for a awesome pull, does it lead to any torque steer if you floor it?

My BMW Coupe is a 3 litre diesel but being rear wheel drive allows full on acceleration in a perfect line.

Heres hoping the weather is good for you on the 6th - though with S-O2s just make sure its VERY dry eh!

Days of driving the winding lanes of Cornwall in the dry allowing the rear wheel drive of my BMW M Sport Coupe to drift the bends holds for a delightful dream - soon to once again become reality.

The winter took its toll on the rear wheel drive (pretty useless in the snow and ice this year offered) - so, like you, new 'shoes' have been recently fitted - I prefer Michelin Pilots P2

What version of the Golf do you have? I owned an R32 until a coupe of years ago when the Police convinced me (please interpret!) that it had to go.

So there is nowt odd about your little universe - we seem to share a similar desire....... bring it on!
The Golf is a Mark IV TDi which has been subtly "fiddled with". There's nothing obvious done (apart from the slightly bigger wheels) but under the bonnet it has been remapped, de-catted and the induction changed. So it now produces around 180bhp with 290lb/ft of tourque (up from the original 130/228) and still maintains a long term average of better than 51mpg. Essentially it is "comfortable, economical, reliable transport" and has a "touring setup" hence the tyre choice.

The old Porsche 944 S2, however, is "fun". It scratches my itch for a "classic" plus it has outstanding handling due to its rear-wheel drive and perfect 50-50 weight distribution. It is sitting on Bridgestone Potenza S-02s in Porsche type-approved N3 fitment (quite hard to find). They're soft as butter, an out and out, no compromise performance summer tyre and they grip and grip and grip and grip and grip...

It is a little early yet for the old girl to come out to play on a regular basis, but she might get a trip down to Goodwood on 6th March if the weather is nice.
