Thread: Corvette in HDR

    Default Corvette in HDR

This is my first post and also one of my first attempts at HDR.
I'm new to the DSLR world with just getting my '5DII' this past Christmas, having previously owned a Canon S5IS.
I thought my car would make a good test subject for trying out the HDR technique..
3 bracketed exposures, (-2, 0, +2) and processed them in Photomatix.
    C&C welcomed and much appreciated....

Nice car. These are nice for your first HDR attempt. Welcome to the ZO. Boy, you sure jumped in the deep end when you upgraded. Nice camera.

    Great job Jim!

    Im a "Bow-Tie" guy myself!
It looks like the first shot of the car is distorted (with the body lines), did you use a wide angle lens?

I have to agree whole heartedly. A full frame sensor does wonders for a car's lines! You used a 17 or an 18mm right. It sure looks like it!

t any rate, great work. Althought.... reflections in #3

Thanks guys.... ....I used my Sigma 12-24 for these shots...I was actually going for a some-what surreal look using the super-wide angle along with HDR processing...

I'm so SICK of the overused HDR technique for people without much "photography" experience but you did a WONDERFUL job. These shots are gorgeous without being overly done.
And the Corvette's pretty nice too

I'm trying to decide between the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L or the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS w/ 2X Extender.... ...any suggestions?..

How quickly you forget the THREE (3) photo limit per thread, Jim.

On the lens question, why do you need a long lens like the 100-400? You don't have any photos in your gallery, so I have no idea what you normally shoot. I shoot a 5D and have both the lenses you ask about. 98% of my photography can easily be done with my 24-105 4L IS. I can't tell you the last time I used either of the other two lenses, nor my old 17-35 2.8L They all collect dust and they are all great lenses. I wouldn't even consider the 2X extender for either of those two lenses. Maybe the 1.4 extender for the 70-200 2.8L but not for the 100-400.

BTW, that engine compartment and the interior in my eyes are really UGLY. Your photos are fine.......it's the car. To each his own, I suppose. I would get a headache riding in that thing.

The trick to good photography is to learn where to point your camera and when to push the shutter. The EYE is more important than all the technical stuff.

Apparantly some misinterpretted my post as an insult..so I just want to clarify that I wasn't trying to say anything bad about your pictures...I was referring to a lot of people I see who rely on HDR as a technique to make mediocre pictures amazing (not on this forum..) that end up way overdoing the effect.... I was merely complimenting the fact that the pictures you produced were great and that your use of HDR was done very well.

No problem Jess, I didn't take it as an insult at all...I knew what you were saying about the over-done HDR processing by a lot of new-comers...I have a problem getting a little extreme with it sometimes myself...
    Thanks for the comments....

Hi Landis...I shoot mostly car shows & landscape....I'm wanting to try some wildlife photography later on.
I own two lens at the present time...EF 24-105 IS you spoke of and a Sigma 12-24....
I'm actually leaning more toward the 70-200 2.8 since a lot of my shots are at indoor car shows.
Like you say, to-each-his-own as far as the car goes...It's about 70% show car & 30% driver...
It would be a mighty boring world if we all had the same tastes...
    Thanks for the comments...

Beautiful images Jim. Cars really aren't my thing, but THAT is an awesome ride. An incredible amount of time, talent and money must have gone into it.

I agree with most of the other comments on the HDR. It looks good.

That's a nice show car you have there. The photos are alright. The sky in the 3rd shot is a bit over done. I've found that when mixing HDR and cars together, tone back or mask out the HDR on the car it's self. This keep the car looking real with the surroundings just enhanced (if you keep the effect tone down). Just my thoughts.

Steve, HDR is High Dynamic Range... combining multi exposures to get detail in the shadows and highlights.

Hey Steve, great to se you on here and thanks for the nice comments....
Like Keith said above, when creating an HDR image, you take multiple bracketed exposures (usually three or more) and combine them together into one.
Hope to see ya' at the Corvette Forum Cruise-In in a couple weeks....
