Build a Rainbow - Long-term Assignment

Here is a new long term assignment to take part in alongside our other assignments which run more frequently. This assignment will be open ended meaning that there is no finish date. As new members join Zo they can take part and add to this thread. There is no deadline for this assignment, take as long as you want to complete it. For some it might be a few weeks, for others it might be a year - do it in your own time.

Build a Rainbow works like this. There are seven commonly accepted colours of the rainbow - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. Your assignment is to take a single photo for each of the colours in the rainbow. Your photo must mostly consist of the single colour, we want nice bold bright colour covering at least 80% of your image. Your rainbow album will consist of seven photos, each one representing one of the colours of the rainbow. As an optional extra you may take an eighth photo which contains all the colours of the rainbow in a single image. You can use photos from any time in the past, but be encouraged to shoot new photos specifically for this assignment.

I encourage you to create an album here at the Zo Gallery to upload your rainbow photos into, but if you really want to host the photos off site you may. Remember your photos are more likely to be viewed and commented upon by members if you upload here to Zo gallery. When you have finished building your rainbow please let us know by replying to this thread and post a link to your rainbow gallery so we can all take a look at your rainbow and leave some feedback on the photos. You may also provide a screenshot "proof" image of your rainbow gallery and post that as an image in this thread alongside the link to your rainbow gallery. Please do not post full size images of each of the seven rainbow photos into this thread. Below I have given some instructions with screen shots of how to create an album at the Zo gallery, how to upload into the gallery, how to take a screenshot proof of the gallery and how to post your rainbow gallery link.

Here is a colour swatch of the rainbow colours to use as a guide.

Instructions to create an Album here at Photozo Gallery

Click on the Gallery link at the top of the page:

Then click on My Albums:

Click on Create a New Album:

Give your Album a name and description. Make sure the Is the Album Private? question is set to No. Then click on Create a New Album

Instructions how to upload into your Build a Rainbow Album

Click on Gallery:

Then click on My Albums:

Locate the Build a Rainbow album in your list of albums. You may need to scroll down the page if you already have a few albums. Click on the Upload Photos link next to the album:

Click on the Browse button and locate the photo on your computer that you'd like to upload into the gallery. Select the photo and click Open. You can upload more than one photo, click on the next browse button in the list to upload another photo. When you're finished selecting all the photos you want to upload, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Upload. Follow the screen instructions for putting in titles and descriptions before processing the list for uploading.

Your photo should now be in the Build a Rainbow Album that you created.

Instructions for making a screenshot "proof" of your rainbow gallery

When you're happy with all the photos in your rainbow album you will want to share it in this thread so that other members can visit your rainbow. You can make a screenshot proof by following these instructions.

Click on Gallery:

Then click on My Albums:

Find the Build a Rainbow Album and click on the title text:

Your Build a Rainbow album will show up with rows of four thumbnails. Scroll the page down if necessary so that all seven or eight thumbnails are visible on your screen without any parts being out of view. Take a screenshot of the page by pressing down the print screen button on your keyboard - Prnt Scrn. Now open a blank document in your photo editing software (Photoshop) and Paste (Ctrl V). It should paste the screenshot onto the blank page. Crop our all the bits that are not necessary like browser bar etc. Save this as a jpg file and upload it into your Build a Rainbow album.

(Note: this is not my rainbow assignment, I've used some exisitng photos for an example)

If you view the screenshot in your album you'll see underneath the image are some links. Select the text in the box that says Linked Image, copy that and paste it into the forum thread. This will post the image into the forum thread.

The link to your Build a Rainbow album can be found in the address bar of your browser. Go to the Build a Rainbow album as mentioned above, so that you are viewing the album with rows of four thumbnails. Click on the http address in the browser address bar and copy that. Paste it into the forum thread so that members can visit your album.

I thought you might enjoy this one Michael, you can make as many as you like. You could make a rainbow for each season or a rainbow on different themes e.g. still life, street photography, landscape, flora, macro etc. There are no limitations, it's all down to your interpretation of the assignment so come up with whatever you want.

Leonie, this does sound interesting, but with such an open end time, I wonder if I will ever get it done.

I'm really excited to see our first rainbow assignment completed and posted, great job Michael and it sets a nice example of what the assignment is all about. I think my favorite photo in your rainbow is the huge smiley face for the indigo photo, what a great find

An excellent idea Leonie, I love this. The possibilities are endless and as soon as I am back from the UK, sorted out my backlog of work etc. etc. I shall certainly give this a go. In fact, I already have the germ of an idea for my first rainbow.

These are great Peg, I love that you've done the rainbow on a theme of signs. Is the photo of the crocus flowers a gardening label or a painting, it looks like it's painted on stone?

Thank you ladies. Nothing special here really. Hard to make signs more than what they are in their natural settings. The bgs can be very distracting hence the tight crops.
Leonie, I raise an assortment of herbs. I enjoy painting the natural stones found around our property. This one is of the herb "saffron". I use them as signs, markers and garden decorations. Thank you for asking. ~~Peg

This is really late to the party, but I took these way in early Dec. at the casino. We were there to see the Gingerbread houses. This is a wall tucked in a corner lit with a light that changes color. Just stood there and waited for the colors to change. Did a little but not much processing on these. Had really hard time deciding where blue change into indigo.

To remember the order of the colors think of this phrase Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain.

Thanks Leonie. Had these pictures for a long time before I got to them. Just decided if everyone else was posting old pictures, I might as well. It is not usually my thing to go back that far in time.
