Thread: The bikes are back. It's race season.

Default The bikes are back. It's race season.

I learned more about photography today than I have in the last year. I have been in hundreds of races but never photographed one before. This was the first race of the season. The Avondale Criterium in Avondale AZ. C&C is always welcome.

    I shot 850 photos.
    441 were keepers.
212 made the best of album.
    44 got 4 stars.
    It was a good day.

    I learned a bit about panning. 1/60

    Off the front

    Had to dig a big hole next to the road to get this one. ;}

This is one of my favorite shots of the day. Too bad I effed it up. Missed focus and way overexposed it. If Cadwell had shot it, it would be a huge poster on my wall right now.

Ya, it's real ink. That is how we roll in AZ.

These are nice Brian, you did well. With the second photo I'd crop it down to remove the person standing on the left, my eye keeps looking at him rather than the cyclist. And if you're good with the clone tool I'd remove the lady at the right too.

Brian Pretty good job in the blazing sun. Am curious about that rating system and how you work it. Unless you let someone else rate them. Just asking. 850 pictures is a lot to go thru. What will you do the 400 odd that are keepers?

Leonie, those people are in the photo on purpose. For me the shot is just as much about them as the cyclist.

Skippy, the rating system is my own goofy thing. 5 star is the highest rating.(I have never given myself one of these) 2 stars are the worst shots that I will keep. 3 stars are shots that I am willing to show people and put on my smugmug page. 4 star shots are the ones I WANT to show and get feedback on. It is not very scientific but it is very helpful for me in keeping things organized in my library.

The 400 other photos will be available for purchase by teams and racers at one of my smugmug sites.

Cool Brian, At least you have the possibility of a little income from this expensive hobby.

I do love your explanation of the star system. It's a little how I think too.

Awesome! Just another reason to hate being in WI and a cyclist

I used a monopod for one race and then shot handheld the rest of the day. I found the mono to be of little value for this type of shooting. I was shooting on the ground most of the day and changing lenses often.

I will try to take a look at it. All my photos have keywords and ratings. I can find just about any picture just by asking who, what or where.
