The delayed (from January) Vintage Sports Car Club New Year Driving Tests day at Brooklands circuit proved much more of a test for the EOS 1D Mark IV.
The light was awful... and I mean awful. I started off the day at ISO 800 and it just got worse. I really appreciated the Mark IV's ability to reach for high ISO without me having to worry my head about noise. In previous years I would have been concerned about it and would have been forced to shoot at ultra-wide apertures in order to keep the ISO down. This time I could close the aperture down and get some welcome depth of field; I get the front of the car and the driver in focus!
This particular example was shot at 1/250th, ISO 1250 and f/5.6 using the Mark IV (of course) and the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX HSM at 300mm.
In the afternoon session I chose to shoot the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM as an experiment. My Mark II was OK with this lens but the Mark III hated it and the results were very poor. It seems the 70-200mm and the Mark IV get on MUCH better. This is a good thing, since the 70-200 was becoming a bit of a paper-weight.

Someone is bound to comment in the inclusion of the cones in this shot and the others in the gallery. Let me say from the outset that it was quite deliberate on my part. Driving around the cones on the course in the right order, against the clock is what this event was all about. The cones need to be there!
p.s. the car is a Wolseley Hornet Special.
