Default What's your Internet Connection Speed

As part of our review we are looking at our rules surrounding the amount of photos allowed per thread

We currently restrict this to five due to the limitations of those suffering 'dial-up' speeds.
However we haven't reviewed this for some time and would be grateful if you would let us know your internet speed

    If unsure try this link
    http://www.speedtest.net/

Please answer using your 'download' speed (the first result if you use the link

    Thanks - Moderators

    OK!

I accept your point - there are indeed numerous occasons when the 5 photo rule is overlooked

    Hence the review.

Thumbnails are an option, not necessarily an option I personally like, but an option all the same. The other aspect we need to consider is image size. The 860(?) pixel limit can be frustrating, especially when pano type photos are being shared. We need to get a feel of what speed of connection our members are using so that we can weigh up whether or not an increase in image size and/or number of images displayed in one post is fair. Personally I'd like to see the limits relaxed a bit more, but at the same time we don't want to drive away a large chunk of our membership because we're pushing those limits too far. Without data we can't make informed decisions, hence this poll.

Perhaps if anyone is having difficulty viewing threads like the 52 week project they can let us know. That will help us to understand if these types of threads are acceptable or if we need to look into other ideas about structuring and handling these types of projects.

My speed is 16.28mb. I'm not wild about the thumbnail option, either.

Perhaps there could be a new option, set in the USER CP, to "Show all images at 500px as the start size"? Then users with poor bandwidths could tick this option and benefit from the faster page loads.

Now that's an idea I like very much, customise to the user rather than try to make one size fits all.

Consider yourselves lucky. My speed is slow it won't even measure it.

When I down load something from the internet, that little window tells me it is usually around 5.5 or lower sometimes I have seen it 2.2 kbs that is not a typo..........kbs.

My screen has a resolution of something like 1980, 21 inch dell. When it was new I hated it. Missed my 17 in crt. When I changed it to 1024 things got a little better. At least I can read most stuff now. Some programs still have pretty small icons or print in the menus.

Now it is not the width of the pictures that cause the slow down. It is the size of the files. When I first came here, trying to follow all the rules, no more than 800 on the longest side and no more than 200 kb, now at 250 kb and 1024 on the longest side. It would get rather frustrating when some consistently post pics of 300, 400 or 500 kb. A picture that is 800 wide and 500 high, is still 450 kb if not compressed right. If we use the wrong off site hosting services, it can also be slower. Photobucket at the top of the list, at the moment tinypics won't even load a whole photo for me that the new member is using. And for the half of photos that are loading I think they would be interesting would they would load. Flicker can be so, so depending on if they are busy. I use them, but unlike RobN the site for me is staggeringly slow and I only use it mostly for storage.

There is an action for PS that Landis wrote and a script for PSP that Jim posted I have them both making resizing easy for whatever size of pixel width. When finished with resizing you are done. You still have to save as and select the right amount of compression to get them to at or under the allotted size. The step that most forget or just don't do. Yet you can have great pictures if you do it right. Both PSP and PS will tell you how many kb's your picture will be at the compression rate you choose. And with actions and scripts there should be no reason to be oversized.

Take a look at Ungaloob pictures back in 2008. Many times they were around 100 kb. Yes they have shorter pixel heights and widths, but they don't have too be.

RobN, I am not picking on you, but using this as an example, the 1st picture in this thread is 668 kb and Flicker never loaded the second one tonight. Itf you had compressed it to a picture of 250 kb that is all that would have been viewed in your post.

    http://www.photozo.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23114

In this thread there are 4 photos with a total of less than 800 kb. for all four of them.

In conclusion, I would like to see the programming or software of the Zo upgraded or written to load no more than 250 kb of any picture no matter where it is hosted at. This should be a doable action.

Sorry this is so long, I just don't know how to say it any other way. Being as it's a matter of size the program should be able to handle that so the mods don't have too.

    Skippy

PS. You can find the PSP script here in down sizes and up sizes in steps.

Landis's actions for down sizing in steps can be found in this thread.

Go to UserCP. Look down the left hand side of the page and click on "Edit Options", it's under a heading called Settings & Options. Scroll down the page until you see Thread Display Options. In The Image Resizer you can set the size you want the forum to resize images to. It will default to 1024 pixels but if you type in a number you can force it to display a smaller image if you want.

    I hope that helps!
