Thread: Who Do You Contact?

  1. Default Who Do You Contact?

My image "arsenal" contains some shots I would like to submit to various equine magazines and catalogues for consideration. I know that each publication usually has its own set of guidelines and procedures, so I don't want to send anything out blind.

Who have you found to be the best person (or department) to contact for submission information? Would you contact them by email, phone? Do you have to belong to any organization in order for your work to be considered?

Newbie questions, thanks for bearing with me.

If you know the names of the publications, get their phone number and give them a call. Simply ask the telephone receptionist what you want to do and she will put your call to the right department.

The trick to good photography is to learn where to point your camera and when to push the shutter. The EYE is more important than all the technical stuff.

Both good ways to go. It's always nice when someone recommends a publication from personal experience. So many times it's hype. Thank you both - I'll give both ideas a go.

In my search for the 2008 Freelance book, I see it's only listed on Amazon in the UK. Is this pertinent to the British market only? Amazon in US doesn't have this exact book, but another under a similar title by a different author. Just curious.

OK, another idea. Buy some of these mags and look at the masthead to find out who and where to contact.

Diana thanks for posting that question, I too want to know more about submiting my images to magazines.

But I thought you would contact the editor?

Contacting the editor would be the obvious choice. I thought for basic information such as submission guidelines, what they're looking for, if they're even looking, etc., a publication may have an advertising or circulation department, which would handle such requests.

I would think those questions could be easily answerd by the editor. I am sure some magazines have their own staff of photographers, so as for department I would look for "Photography"

Look for the magazine you would like to submit to and google it.
