Thread: Cropping bites

    Default Cropping bites

I didn't know where to post this one and it's kind of a question and a comment at the same time....here goes....

Some pictures I take look better uncropped and if I'm printing them I have to crop them to the same old 8x10, 5x7, or 4x6 size each time. When are the photo paper and printer companies going to start making paper that will scale to the sizes of images coming off todays digital cameras instead of having to scale our pictures to fit their paper? I imagine that more and more people are going digital everyday and digital owners should make up a large enough percentage to justify the photo paper and printer companies making these adjustments. It sure would be nice but I'll quit dreaming for now.

If anyone knows of an online print company or any other company that can print photos without having to crop them (maybe just resize them) please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Jason

photoaccess as recommended in the links section on photozo does make digital prints which are cut to fit the picture you take.

    1. Anywhere can do that - they just need to print to fit the frame, not fill the frame - then you'll need to trim a little off the edge of your shots to get your odd sizes...

    2. The printing companies are aware of the ratio issues, and you'll see more and more places are now offering sizes such as 6 X 4.5 to allow for that 4:3 ratio rather than the 3:2 that photographic industry has been used to - of course, 5X7 and 8X10 don't conform to 3:2 either - people who print images have always either had to make a creative choice of where to crop an image to print it at a size, or leave it in the hands of a lab operator... this isn't a NEW problem, you're just feeling persecuted because YOUR camera doesn't match the 'standard' sizes... and possibly, you're more used to filling your computer screen with an image... scan a 6X4 and you have to work out where to crop to fit 800X600 too...

    3. I shoot with a 10D - 3072 X 2048 gives me a 512dpi 6X4 - no cropping, the format already is 3:2 - but I still need to choose where to crop when I print a 5X7 or an 8X10... unfortunately it's part of being a photographer... not everything matches screen resolution...

    Cheers,

    hi,

for an easy optimizing an cropping your images for print services, you can use fixfoto. with fixfoto you can create your own profiles for your digital print service with formats, dpi and resizing method. and the best, fixfoto costs only $40.

all seems a bit technical to me, why not open a blank page to your paper size, and paste your uncropped image into it, and of course, save the file with edges.

not done this myself, but would 'nt the images come out the shape desired ?

Thanks Stuart for this answer !!! Exactly the confirmation i was looking for since awhile :=)
Why should we still use the 8x10 format knowing that 8x12 is perfect ratio? How would react US customers if they were offered 8x12 instead of 8x10? Any thoughts?

JpegCrops is by far the most useful utility I have for fast cropping and rotating images... and I know we've mentioned it here before, but the current version is a knockout, especially running under XP... but the page is down so I can't even give it a plug...

We do get 8X12 as an option here... but of course, the labs have clicked on it's usefulness and charge quite a bit more than is really fair for the amount of extra paper used...

Also bear in mind costs if you want to frame your print. Frames off the shelf conform to the standard sizes 8"x6", 10"x8", 12"x10". Of course if this print is a one off then you won't mind paying the extra for framing it yourself or getting someone to frame it for you.

I, rarely shoot to the standard, I crop 90+% of the time, but I do produce some wallpapers which have to conform to screen sizes.

Every picture you take is a recorded moment of your life, it is unique, it is seen through your eyes and your eyes alone, it is composed with your mind, heart and soul and is worth sharing.
