Thread: Doe and a crooked gull

  1. Default Doe and a crooked gull

She was really not afraid. Posed for me quite nicely

OK, now check out this seagul, it's beak goes left and right instead of up and down!! Freaky!

    Thanks guys

The deer and gull are barely cropped, just a tad for asthetics. So they both are actually full frame images. And sure I'll answer any questions I can

I used my Nikon D40 with my 70-300 AF-S VR 4.5-5.6 lens. I used aperture priority @F8. My lens is sharpest between F8 and F11. But it was getting dim so I only went F8. I shot it out my driver's side window (rolled down or course ) hand held with the car running still so I didn't spook the deer.

I think Canon has a similar IS lens that is even sharper than my 70-300VR and is also in the 500 dollar region.

Ron you are getting so good at drive by shootings. I like the late light on the doe.

The gull does look different, but then again not. Be neat to see it eat.

Sue the 70-300 IS is what he is talking about. It sells for 500-600. There is also the the 70-300 IS DO macro it goes for just over a thousand, but it is not as sharp as the regular one.

Yes you are going to be pricey if you start going long and fast.

I am thinking of it Wayne,, I'm just concerned about the f/5.6,, will it be fast to catch wildlife shots well??

oh Wayne, I sent you a reply to your last pm,, but I don't think you got it,, (did you?) because the site crashed from work,, it was a good long one too,, tons of questions,,

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the great comments

Sue, yes the 70-300 IS is the one I had read reviews on. It's supposed to be pretty darn sharp. I've wanted a 70-200 F2.8 but so far I'm doing good, even with birds in flight, with my 4.5-5.6. someday I'll get a faster lens, but I know it's gonna be 2x as heavy too, ouch.

You should be able to get a lot of wildlife shots with a 400 5.6, especially if it's sharp enough wide open at 5.6 . Most of my shots (not that I'm shooting 'Wayne quality' ) but are from F8 to F11. My only struggles are with humming birds in the late evening at those apertures.

I don't know how I missed these. Your doe is wonderful, I love the tall grass, it really adds an element of being in the wild. Excellent job.

Really love the doe image. The grass is a plus. I so need to get a good lens for telephoto work. Great job on both these images Ron. ~~Peg
